Below is my response to this week’s 100 word story challenge set by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. For her Friday Fictioneers, each Wednesday she encourages writers to reflect on a picture prompt.
Beware of the Frog
by Denarii Peters
Itsy was a contented child; life in Comptometer was pleasant, the web filled with fifty foolish flies. (Mrs. Bitsy invited them in and they never left.)
But Itsy wanted so much to travel, and the faraway land of Typewriter beckoned.
Over on the horizon lay the mysterious continent of Windowsill, from which a vibrant light spread across planet Tabletop.
Rumours told of islands of stone, waving prairies filled with rustling grasses.
She was spoilt for choice. Except…
What were these frightening tales of monsters told by captured flies? “The frog and the owl will get you. And we won’t cry.”
So, there you have it. You can read (and maybe like or comment on) the other participants’ stories by clicking on this link. I know I will! Once again, I’d also like to extend my thanks those lovely fellow writers who liked and commented on my own pieces in earlier weeks.
I’m looking forward to the publication of my forthcoming debut novel, The Reluctant Reaper, the first book in the Ross Ferris trilogy, on 31st July! Read the blurb here! It’s already available on Amazon for pre-order (only £9.99, folks!) In the meantime, my editor, Sue, and I are continuing to get to grips with the second book, House of Wraiths.
And, of course, my short story collection Will You Walk into My Parlour, 27 tales of all things supernatural, (also published by Crystal Clear Books) is available from all sorts of places, including direct from the publisher here. Why not take a look at the sample on Amazon? (Link here) I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
I’ve just started my duties as a reader for the upcoming Hysteria 2025 writing competition. (Details are here.) Not many in so far, so between now and the end of August I’m going to be pretty busy reading and rating lots of other people’s stories.
I hope you liked today’s piece. Please feel free to comment below. And I do so love a like!

Great story, ending in a great last line "The frog and the owl will get you, and we won't cry." 🤓
